How to create a photo strip

The vertical photo strip — three or four shots stacked with crisp white borders — is a timeless format. It started in coin-operated photo booths and now shows up in scrapbooks, wedding favours, Instagram stories, and fridge magnets. You can recreate the look from your own photos without a booth, using nothing but your browser.

Step by step

1. Open StitchPic. Use the two boxes plus the + Add image tile to load three or four photos.
2. Reorder them with the up/down arrows so they read top-to-bottom the way you want.
3. Set the direction to Vertically.
4. Under Resize images, choose Crop biggest (for uniform square-ish frames) or Reduce biggest (to keep full frames). This makes every photo the same width.
5. Set spacing to around 20–30 px and the background colour to white for the classic booth border.
6. Press Merge!, then Download PNG.

Getting the classic look right

Use a consistent crop

Photo-booth strips look uniform because every frame is the same shape. Choosing Crop biggest trims your photos to a shared width and keeps the subject centred, which mimics the booth's fixed frame far better than leaving mixed sizes.

White borders sell it

The white gap between and around frames is what makes a strip read as a strip. A spacing of 20–30 px with a pure-white background is a good starting point. Want a softer, vintage feel? Try a cream colour (something like #f7f3ea) instead of stark white.

Three or four frames

Traditional strips have four frames, but three works well for portrait-orientation phone screens. More than four and the strip gets very tall and thin — fine for printing, less ideal for screens.

Printing your strip

A real photo-booth strip is about 2 inches wide. If you plan to print, start with high-resolution photos so the final strip has enough pixels — aim for at least 600 px wide per frame. Because StitchPic exports a lossless PNG at full resolution, your strip will print crisply as long as your source photos were sharp to begin with.

Common questions

Can I make a horizontal strip instead?

Absolutely — just choose Horizontally and the frames will sit left to right, which suits wide screens and banners.

How many photos can I add?

Up to 30 in a single merge, though 3–4 is ideal for the strip look.
